The U.S.S. FORSTER (DE 334) - named in honor of Machinist Edward William Forster was was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, on October 6, 1884 and was killed in enemy action in the battle of the Solomon Islands on August 10, 1942.

Machinist Forster enlisted in the U.S. Navy on August 15, 1919, and after reenlisting in the u.S. Navy seven times, he was appointed Machinist on July 23, 1942, by the president, for temporary service, to rank from June 25, 1942.

He reported to the U.S.S. VINCENNES on August 17, 1940. Machinist Forster received the following decoration: American Defense Service Medal 1939-1941. The ship was sponsored by his widow, Mrs. Grace Forster of 136 Eighth Street, East Ocean View, Norfolk (3), Virginia.

The U.S.S. FORSTER began her career in Orange, Texas where her keel, beams, steel plates, engines, guns, torpedoes, and Uncle' Sam's finest radio, radar and sound gea. were molded to make the splendid fighting unit she proved to be against the enemies planes and subs.
